7 strategies for dealing with upset students

Moments of frustration, anger, sadness happen from time to time in the classroom, no matter what age you teach.  It's an incredible opportunity to create a deeper bond and model behaviors they can use in their own relationships.  Here are 7 things you can say when trying to help a student through a difficult moment.

  1.  We're on the same team.  I'm here to help you.
  2.  I see this is really hard for you.
  3.  What can I do to help?
  4.  It's ok to feel sad/anxious/frustrated, etc.
  5.  Do you want to take a break?
  6.  You're safe here.  I care about you and want to help.
  7.  Let's come up with a solution together.

Setting up an environment where students know they are supported and cared about can help them cope with the frustrations and emotions they experience as they learn and grow.
